Times Are Hard For Dreamers

Happy Sunday Folks!

This week I carry with me a beautiful musical named “Amelie”. This show has been streamed all summer on my Spotify, and I can’t seem to get enough of it.

To give you a little insight into what the show is about, here’s a little summary from the show’s website.

“Amélie is the story of an astonishing young woman who lives quietly in the world, but loudly in her mind. She secretly improvises small, but extraordinary acts of kindness that bring happiness to those around her. But when a chance at love comes her way, Amélie realizes that to find her own contentment she’ll have to risk everything and say what’s in her heart. Amélie is a new musical based on the much loved five-time Oscar®-nominated film.

Come and be inspired by this imaginative dreamer who finds her voice, discovers the power of connection and sees possibilities around every corner. Although times are hard for dreamers, Amélie is someone to believe in.”

The writer, Craig Lucas, and the director, Michael Fentiman, worked together to make the beautiful wonder that is Amelie. Among the cast was Hamilton star Philipa Soo, who originated the role of the title character. Other cast members included (among others) Savvy Crawford as Young Amelie, Adam Chanler-Berat as her love interest, Nino, and Tony Sheldon as her wise negihbor Dufayel.

We are fortunate enough to have the cast album recording, which can be found on Youtube or Spotify. Go give it a listen when you have the time. Best for the optimists and dreamers.

For me, this musical holds a dear place in my hart. Like shows I’ve talked about in past Show Tune Sundays, this musical is for the dreamer in all of us. With how tough things get, musicals are a wonderful place to sneak away and hide yourself, the audio wonder of an amazing book.

Amelie does that perfectly, because the main character is a wild dreamer herself, letting her heart carry her head to wherever she goes.

A Snapshot From The Musical

We follow Amelie through the album, from childhood to adulthood, seeing her imagination in full bloom and watching her heart grow full and tender. We hear her trial and error attempts at adulthood and even watch her emotional struggles.

Her issues with her parents, her repetitive lifestyle, and her hardcore fantasy world all stop spinning when she discovers a box full of children’s trinkets in her bathroom. When she discovers the metal box, she dedicates herself to finding the owner, taking her across a string of French towns and forcing her to meet new people.

She Finds The Metal Box

She meets a boy a the train station that makes her heart pound and becomes the friend of a neighbor who helps her complete her mission. Once she reunites the owner and his box, she feels such joy that it sparks a chain of random acts of kindness she completes for those surrounding her.

Amelie has run-ins, again and again, with this train station boy amidst her kindness, and is forced to bestow one upon him when she becomes the unintentional possessor of his beloved photo album.

Through many obstacles, she pushes to give him back his lost album, struggling with her own emotions the entire time. For me, this is a strong point for resonation, something important with any story you approach.

For Amelie, it seems the idea of love is much more appealing than the action of it, and I can honestly say that I feel the exact same way. There are many things in this world that are terrifying, and for me and Amelie, love is one of those things.

Amelie: A New Musical
Another Pivotal Moment From The Show

Eventually, things resolve themselves with the help of those around her. Amelie pushes aside her fears and gives Nino a chance, in turn giving herself a chance to experience things outside of her imaginary world.

This show is truly for the dreamer and gives the optimist a little something too. In times like these, we need those dreams, and this musical teaches you to hold on to them, and hold on tight.
