The Search For Elle Woods

Every once in a while, at the peak of my musical obsession and at the very low points in the realization of the difficulty of a Broadway dream, I fall down a youtube hole that very few theatre kids remember exists.

“Legally Blonde: The Musical – The Search for Elle Woods”

This reality T.V. series from the early 2000s’ documents the journey of ten women with the dream of being Elle Woods in Legally Blonde the Musical on Broadway. Each episode, a number of one to two contestants are booted off as the rest continue to audition and fight for the role of a lifetime.

The push on with their fight in front of millions of MTV viewers, a panel of judges (Heather Hach, Bernie Telsey, and Paul Canaan-their journeys beginning and ending with Jerry Mitchell) and the entire cast of the Broadway production.

This group of young, talented women showcased their best efforts and greatest strengths and faced the possibility of elimination with each workshop and audition. They created bonds that are lasting a lifetime and careers that only grew from the reality T.V show’s production, which can be read about here, in Playbill’s “The Oral History of Legally Blonde: The Musical – The Search for Elle Woods.”

Now that I’ve told you the basics of the situation, I’m gonna continue with my absolute obsession with this series.

I would like to say that I only binge what’s left of the show on youtube every once in a blue moon, but that is certainly not the case. I remember this series and watch it rapidly at least once a month. At least.

But this summer I’ve already gone through the five or so hour-long episodes available on youtube six times. I watch it while I’m getting ready for the day, brushing my teeth at night, and even on trips to the gym.

Specifically, the episode where they’re all belting while on stationary bikes. That’s a dream I didn’t know I had.

This show is more inspiring than it probably seems. The reality show aspect certainly doesn’t give it the respect or credit that it deserves, but the people are truly and completely talented.

Most of them are on Broadway, have been, or have found a career in other levels or fields of interest. Most commonly, fitness.

The women who share this odd trauma (is it trauma? I mean, I would call it trauma) of this wildly ridiculous process all came together last year to perform a concert of the songs from the musical that brought them all together.

Though my favorites didn’t win (Autumn and Rhiannon, by the way. I’ll always be team Autumn and Rhiannon), the show is incredibly interesting and totally captivating. Almost as captivating as Legally Blonde the Musical itself.

Which, I mean, we’re ready for a revival anytime, Broadway. Whenever you’re ready.

Now if you don’t mind me, I’ll be watching the series from the very beginning, because just writing about it has gotten me antsy to rewatch. I recommend that you all do the same, especially if you’ve got dreams of Broadway too!

I’ll write you all again on Wednesday as I pack for the NSLC Theatre Trip! I am crazy excited and may not be sharing it with you as I experience it myself. I’ll explain it all on Wednesday!

Until then!
